About //

Sophie Green, a London-based documentary photographer (b. 1991), explores the often-overlooked margins of British culture. For over a decade, she has focused on communities and subcultures tied together by shared identity and heritage. Through her lens, she uncovers the rituals and idiosyncrasies that unite individuals, highlighting how collective practices preserve cultural traditions and strengthen identity. Her work spans subjects like Aladura Spiritualist churches, banger racing, travellers, and beach culture, revealing the humanity in stories of belonging and connection.

Known for her bold use of colour, graphic detail, and moments of humour, Green merges documentary realism with stylised compositions, balancing portraiture and still life to reveal her subjects' deeper narratives. Many of her projects evolve over several years. Green’s collaborative approach to portraiture fosters authentic and empowering representations, using photographic storytelling to document and share diverse human experiences.

With two published books, Dented Pride (2016) and Congregation (2019), her work has been exhibited internationally at institutions such as The National Portrait Gallery, the V&A, and Somerset House. Her accolades include The Magnum Photos/Photo London Graduate Photographers Award and the Creative Review Zeitgeist Award alongside nominations for the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize and the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize. Her work continues to attract global brands and magazines, Green is currently available for commissions and offers print sales upon request.
